As Christmas approaches the office or work Christmas party becomes a common feature on the work social calendar with employers looking to reward staff for their past year’s efforts.

Employers who provide alcoholic beverages at the workplace during the Christmas party, or any other time, should exercise caution given they may be liable for any subsequent injuries that might be incurred by employees at the workplace during, or immediately, after the function or on their way home. 

Owl PI does not wish to discourage employers from this well-established custom, but employers need to be mindful of where and how they conduct these end of year functions to minimise potential claim against them by employees for a range of matters.
